About the District: Hojai district is located in central Assam and covers an area of about 1,685 Sq. Km. It is bounded by Nagaon district to the north, East Karbi Anglong district to the east and Dima Hasao and West Karbi Anglong district to the south with major rivers such as the Kapili and Jamuna shaping its physical and agrarian landscape. As per the 2011 Census, the district has a population of over nine lakhs and includes three Assembly constituencies—Binnakandi, Hojai and Lumding. The district is home to a diverse mix of communities—Assamese, Bengalis, Muslims, Dimasas, Karbis, Manipuris Hindi speaking people, ex-tea garden workers and others—earning it the description of a “miniature India” for its social and cultural plurality. Traditionally known as the “Rice Bowl” of Assam, Hojai is predominantly an agricultural region and has recently gained prominence for agarwood processing, agar-based exports, especially to Gulf countries.

Hojai district is classified as a developing industrial area in Assam, with focus on utilizing local resources for industrial growth. The district is a key hub for small-scale, agro-based and forest-based industries, particularly focusing on Agarwood distillation, sawmills and bamboo/cane products. It features a Commercial Estate in Hojai, along with numerous private agro-processing units, including rice mills, oil mills and spice grinding, notably in areas like Lumding Road and Danki Gaon. 

Hojai district’s advantages lie in its strategic connectivity via roads and railways, rich cultural heritage with handlooms & weaving, growing tourism potential due to historical sites, making it a hub for rural livelihoods, traditional crafts and forest product trade.

The district offers promising business opportunities cantered around agriculture, specifically in jaggery production (identified as an ODOP product), agarwood and spice trading. Other high-potential sectors include tea processing, aquaculture, handloom and small-scale food processing units, leveraging the region's rich natural resources.
