Description

Assam is situated in the North-Eastern region of India and is the largest north eastern state in terms of population while second in terms of area. The name Assam is derived from the word Asama, meaning “peerless” in the now extinct Ahom language. The neighboring states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya were once part of Assam. The capital, formerly Shillong (now the capital of Meghalaya), was shifted to Dispur, a suburb of Guwahati, in 1972. Assam is India’s gateway to northeast and acts as a vital link for trade with Southeast Asian countries. The state is rich in water resources and has tracts of fertile and. Assam is also the third-largest producer of petroleum and natural gas in the country and has ample reserves of limestone.
